Flex and Flexibility is not only a homage to classic stool design, but is also an integration of historical and social narratives through contemporary twists, particularly from the Civil Rights era. Through design choices, the stool serves as a symbol for resilience, adaptability, and the quest for equality. The intentional weaving of cotton ties the stool to the struggles and progress of Black history before and after the Civil Rights era, symbolizing interconnectedness. The deliberate color palette, including the chocolate walnut and contrasting white and black hues, speaks to the societal contrasts faced in Black lives, emphasizing themes of fitting in, standing out, and the pursuit of equality in a diverse world. In all, this design concept aims to bridge the gap between historical significance and contemporary relevance.
